Must Have Mondays

Have your legs, feet or neck ever been sore from too much walking, running, lifting weights, staring at a computer screen or sitting on a plane too long?  Listen up…

Living in Manhattan, I’m forced to walk and be on my feet a lot.  In addition, I’m a runner as well, so my feet and legs take a lot of pounding.

When I trained for a marathon a few years ago, I would run with a good buddy of mine every now and again.  One warm, spring day after we finished, he pulled some stick looking thing out of the trunk of his car.  He was getting in awkward positions and rolling it up and down his muscles.  Now my friend was the kind that was a competitive runner who had the short split shorts and shaved legs.  Hardcore guy… who knows a ton about physiology and the science of sports.

I asked him about what he was using and he told me it was something called The Stick (either the best or worse name for the product haha)…  It’s a rod of flexible plastic with about 10 big, flat beads around it with rubber handles on each end.  A very, very simple product.

I’ll be honest… at first, I was like “can’t I just stretch or rub my legs with my hands?”  But eventually I gave in, went to the local running store and picked one up for myself.  I LOVE it!  In fact, I use it on an almost daily basis in the morning to loosen myself up.  I think it’s better than hiring a masseuse because you can do it without scheduling it and you only pay for it once.  You can still reap the benefits of regular massage therapy.  There are several different models or varying length and stiffness.

Ever get a sore neck or shoulders?  Who doesn’t every now and then?  Buy a Stick and keep it in you office desk… or toss it in you suitcase when you travel.

You can get one for yourself for about $30.  The company that makes it is pretty small so you’re not going to find this in Dick’s Sporting Goods.  I’d highly suggest going to their website and getting one.  Watch the video below to learn about the science behind it:
