Friday Flicks

When you think of Miami, FL, what kind of images come to mind?

Tan girls in bikinis?  The beach, sun, white sand and sharks?  Little to no clothing?  Men with shirts unbuttoned to their sternum?  Yachts, sports cars and sunglasses?  Excitement?

All of the above?

The movie Miami Vice, inspired by the 1980’s TV series, captures the sultry vibe of the Miami lifestyle perfectly.  In it, two detectives go undercover to learn of and try to take down a massive drug ring.  Sonny (Colin Farrell) and Rico (Jamie Foxx) pose as drug smugglers to infiltrate the cartel.  After some high-stakes negotiations, they get deeper inside the drug ring and meet the kingpin of South Florida.  Then stuff really starts to get exciting…

The film is shot in a dark, smoldering mood and frequently switches to a slightly grainy, jerky cinematography.

It really sucks you in to the Miami-Vice-world.  While the characters all gush style, the background to which they’re filmed is spectacular as well.  There are a few evenings shots with angry clouds smeared against a luscious, tangerine sky.  The movie is as beautiful as it is exciting.

This flick just about has it all.  An Arbitrage Python skin wallet on each of the detectives really would have completed their look, but who am I to judge?  Fast cars, great clothes, gun fights, exotic women and characters with swagger to boot…  You need this movie in your life.
